Home Dashboard

A household dashboard built built to run on old tablet. It brings together weather, calendars, school schedules, bin collections and birthdays in one glanceable display.

01

The problem

Household information was spread across several apps, websites and individual routines. I wanted a single view that answered a simple question: What does everyone need to know today?

02

The solution

The interface is designed around the tablet’s landscape display and limited screen space. Clear cards, strong typography and restrained colour make it easy to scan.

The dashboard also adapts throughout the day. Once the family’s scheduled activities have finished for the day, relevant sections automatically switch to displaying tomorrow’s information.

03

The implementation

The React frontend is backed by a Fastify API that normalises data from Google Calendar, Open-Meteo and the local council’s collection service.

Provider responses are stored in SQLite, giving the application a small persistent cache. If a source becomes unavailable, the dashboard continues showing its last successful data and marks it as stale.

CSS Modules provide scoped styling and precise control over the tablet and mobile layouts.
